Monday, February 16th, 2009

Futons are the cotton or foam mattresses that are flexible and which can be folded easily. You can use them either as mattresses or as couches. They originated in Asia but have gained popularity around the world. Depending on whether you want to use the futon as a couch, a bed or both, there are wide varieties of styles available in the market. These mattresses come in different sizes. A futon can last anywhere from 2 to 10 years as per their quality. Buy a futon with a wall clearance on the frame if you want to move futon away from the wall to convert it into a bed. Here we offer you some tips to select the right futon for your needs.

1) Choose a frame offering a warranty of at least five years. This is essential if you plan to use the futon as a bed as well as a couch.

2) Purchase a futon whose mattress is not less than 6 inches thick. Mattresses whose thickness is less than 6 inches are most likely to be uncomfortable.

3) Find out the nature of the material used in futon. The most common types of materials used in futon are either cotton, a mixture of cotton and foam, a blend of cotton and polyester or a combination of cotton and wool.

4) Buy the heaviest available mattress. Choose from either a full-cotton or a combination of cotton, foam and springs. If you do not want to relocate your futon often, choose the combination of cotton, foam and springs.

5) If you want a light-weight mattress, go for a futon made of cotton and foam. This combination will retain its shape and will not sag. If you want a lighter-weight mattress, choose a cotton-polyester blend. It remains flexible while retaining its shape.

6) For super soft mattress, choose a cotton-wool mattress. But this mattress is comparatively more rigid.

7) For flexibility and to enjoy the feel of your normal mattress, go for an innerspring mattress. But it is heavier than cotton and the combination of cotton and other materials.
8) Check out the comfort and support provided by the futon by lying down on it and distributing your weight equally. Ensure the futon is smooth.

9) The futon comes two types of frames. A bifold frame can be folded once along its length and can be converted into a couch. A trifold can be folded two times along the width to be converted into a couch.
